duolingo, although it used to be better, it does work, but beware of the fact that the Spanish you learn on there is classical Spanish, the sort spoken in South America, not the same as what they speak in Spain, its the equivalent of you going to America and speaking dickensian english

I started learning a bit via BBC online modules years back but can't remember a lot of it. I've still got some grammar books somewhere.
I reckon YouTube will have loads of good content. I did French at uni and there's a really good French grammar channel I watch to try and keep my eye in. Likewise Italian although I should really pick that up again.
Some of it depends on your background. I took an Italian module when I was a student and in the months before I used a "verb drills" book to learn the conjugations. Yes, that's dry as fuck but I was used to learning languages in an academic context and it actually helped me when I was actually came to do the module.

How do you know how much Spanish language teachers charge?
Must have gone to the bottom end of the market...

There are Spanish hookers who charge less per hour than language teachers.

ray winstone 12:41 Interesting ray - I used to love Greek islands and holidayed there a lot.
One of our local farmers has a 120acre Hazelnut orchard and when he split with his co-op that cleaned, sorted & marketed his nuts (!) because they charged too much, he did it himself and enlisted 4 women to help. My wife went and found herself chatting all day in French as they sorted the nuts into hole nuts, broken pieces and retailers that wanted them still in shells.
4 months a year for two years turned her into an almost fluent speaker in French. When I have any difficulties with French I hand my wife the phone...

My four year old daughter has been learning Spanish for three months at pre-school, but still does not know how to say 'please' in Spanish, which is poor for four.

Totally agree about learning best by living with locals who know no English.
I lived in Calcutta (in Indian West Bengal, where the main language is Bengali) for some years and picked up only a smattering of Bengali, because a lot of people speak English or are keen to practice their English. Then moved to Bangladesh for a few years, where very few people outside Dhaka and Chittagong speak English. So I was forced to learn Bengali. It's a pain in the arse situation, but highly conducive for learning another language.

Willtell, it helped me in Greece, I moved into the hills where I had Greek only neighbours, shopkeepers etc and got a job at a radio station where the staff spoke Greek all day. I'm nowhere near fluent but surrounding myself with the natives certainly helped me get to a level.
